We mothers have so much on our plates: from raising our children, to tending to our homes, to making strides in our careers, to keeping the romance alive in our bedrooms, to maintaining our health and fitness, to making time for ourselves. It’s no wonder so many mothers are just plain exhausted. If you’re like me, you’ve wished on many occasions that there was more than one of you to help manage the load that is motherhood.
Well, what if I told you that there IS more than one of you?
No, I’m not speaking of some alternate universe where several versions of you reside. What I’m talking about is your ability to call on one of your alter ego to handle the task at hand. What alter ego, you ask? The ones that are just waiting for you to call on them to come and save the day. Let me give you an example of how one of my alter egos recently came to my rescue.
I’m a model--have been for over 20 years. I’m good at my job and have been fortunate enough to have had a very nice career. I was able to work up until late into my pregnancy, but after I gave birth, I wasn’t interested. All I wanted to do was be at home with my babies. For over two years, I’ve been a happy and exhausted stay-at-home Momma. But as most mothers know, you eventually begin to get that itch. That itch that represents your wanting something that excites you in addition to being a mother. That desire to expand and play. For me, that itch was modeling. I was ready to get back in the game.
And the opportunity to do just that was given to me when I was recently asked to do a photo shoot for a natural hair line’s new campaign. I was thrilled! I’d been using the products and the owner of the line is a friend of mine, so I knew it was going to be a fun shoot. While getting ready the morning of the shoot, I found myself a bit nervous. It’d been a few years since I’d been in front of the camera. I was also still a few pounds away from my goal weight and had some jiggly bits to contend with. I felt a bit of apprehension start to creep up and that’s when I created my new alter ego.
Satine is the name that popped into my head. I immediately knew that I was going to rock this shoot because Satine was the type of woman who oozes confidence and sensuality. At least that is the feeling that I got when “she” came to mind. So off I went to the shoot with Satine in tow.
Because of the creative, playful and artistic nature of modeling, I knew that the folks at the shoot would roll with my bringing Satine along. When I told everyone that once my hair and makeup was complete, I would no longer be Tomiko. I would be Satine. They didn’t even blink an eye. My friend, the client, then asked if I wouldn’t mind doing some tastefully-nude shots for the campaign as well. He said he’d had a vision and hoped that I’d go along. Well, Tomiko was unsure, but Satine was raring to go. So “we” said yes.
And as soon as that larger-than-life natural hair wig was put on my head, Satine took over! My alter ego stepped in and did the damn thing! For real y’all! She was sexy, sassy, playful and confident. She commanded the room and was everything that the client and I needed her to be. It was amazing!!
You can create your own alter ego too. Whether you need one to bring the heat in the bedroom. Or if you need one to handle your rambunctious children. Or maybe your alter ego can help you be more confident and productive at work? When you’re faced with something that you don’t think you can handle, sit still and think of the type of woman that would be more than able to take this challenge on. Apply all of the attributes to her that are needed for the task at hand, give her a name, and embody her. Voila’...your alter ego is born!
Whatever you find yourself challenged with in your life, having an alter ego step in for you might be the very thing you need to get the job done.
Satine and I did it and so can you!
